Q: That"s quite an experience. A: It"s a thing. But I"m not the only one. ... In "68, a lot of people had the same experience. I was supposed to serve a year. I didn"t even make the full 6 months. I was real close to 6 months, but I didn"t even make 6 months. Q: Tell me about the first time it happened. A: It was a stray round ... creased my muscle and popped the muscle out. It didn"t actually keep me out of the field very long. Couple days. Q: What about the second time? A: The second time was a bad day. Shot once, hit by shrapnel twice. Spent a couple weeks in the hospital in-country. And then medevaced to Japan, and Japan decided to send me home. Q: So you actually got out on the second one.
